Where to start with this.
The odyssey is a student run news magazine, made for greeks, by the greeks. This is not the problem. I have no issue with celebrating the great things our community does, or presenting articles about issues facing our community.
Lets look at last weeks edition. On the cover shows a bunch of fraternity men enjoying a football game. Taking a closer look reveals a beer sitting on someones lap. Is this the image we want to portray to our community. I could go further into the cover, but I would have to name names.
On top of that I have no problem saying the editing is very, very poor. Don't get me wrong, I am not the best writer, but I think I could do better.
I can go on for hours, so just ask me about it sometime and I will gladly tell you

ReplyDeleteNick, I'm glad you brought up the Odyssey. Having read roughly 3 or 4 issues of it, I'm not impressed. Sure, they do a good job of highlighting things going on in the community...well if you're one of the 5 chapters represented by their writers. However, more often than not they highlight activities that frankly do not help the image of the Greek community. I'll never forget when one of the writers (perhaps the editor) wrote an article that listed all these great reasons to steal composites from other chapters. After talking about how fun and how great a way to "build community" it was, he quickly mentioned that he wasn't actually condoning stealing. Right, and I'm not actually commenting on your blog right now.
